A Troubled Volunteer

I wonder what my sweetheart means,
     I cannot quite make out;
I told her I fain would enlist,
     Her pretty lips did pout.

“Quite well,” said she, a trifle vexed,
     Then with expression cute;
I’ll let you go, providing you
     Furnish a substitute.”
