“New” Journalism

                             Written by request, for the first edition of the “Cambridge Times”

                I.

Hark! A strange like call upon the street,
     A newsboy’s piercing cry;
“De Cambridge Times, sir,” loud and clear,
     “De Cambridge Times, sir, w’y
It’s de new paper, ain’t yer heard?
     So much der worse fer you;
De Ward T’ree paper, first edish,
     A corer, mister, too…

                 II.

“New Journalism’s” bound to win,
     New Journalism, clean;
And that the “The Times” is all of this,
Will easily be seen.
Progressive and aggressive lines,
     Fearless and up to date;
“Without a muzzle,” a-la Post,
     But wise and full sedate.

                III.

Still rings the cry along the street,
     A journal new is born;
And hark unto the editor,
     The while he took his horn.
Again the newsboy’s pleasant call,
     “De Cambridge Weekly new!
De Cambridge Times, sir, right dis way,
     A corker mister, too.

               IV.

O, there are “times” in Cambridge
     “The Cambridge Times” will show;
There’ll be no keeping shady,
     The things we ought to know.
Cry up, my boy, your journal,
     Plant courage in your tone;
There’s better “Times” for Cambridge
     Than she has ever known.
