To
Certain New Yorkers
Sh!
Sh! Please don’t make any noise,
This is the “Quiet Age”.
Don’t
speak above a whisper lest
Our father Knock should rage.
Connect
soft pedals with your voice,
Think soft if think you must;
Go
out of town if on a spree,
There’s noise in a bust.
Pneumatic
soles upon you boots,
No band upon your hat;
No
metal coin to shake your nerves,
Or anything like that.
Sh!
Sh! This is the “Quiet Age”,
Be not loud in your dress;
And
when you pop the question, boys,
Please do it through the press.

A
possible inspiration may have come from the 1987 Fourth of July sermon given at
the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, the final such for the season as the
building was about to close for a couple of months for repairs.
