Bill Reid

There’s joy in Cambridge, joy intense,
     You see it in the street,
You see it in the wak’ning eyes
     Of students when they meet.
Athletic chests are selling out,
     And on the field and track
Enthusiasm’s run amuck,
     For old Bill Reid’s come back!

The cloud of doubt has passed away,
     The skies are clear and bright;
Old Eli’s knees are quaking now,
     With well occasioned fright.
All eyes are on the crimson now,
     The blue is on the rack;
Take off your hats to Uncle John
     For old Bill Reid’s come back.

William T. Reid, Jr. (October 25, 1878 – September 28, 1976) was an American football player and coach of Harvard's football team for the 1901, 1905, and 1906 seasons. Though his goal was to produce winning teams, mounting injuries and intensifying criticism of the game fueled demands for its abolition and pressured Reid into a leadership role in the momentous 1906 rule changes which defused this threat. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1970.
