Tales of a Tail

I’ve taken, with a grain of salt,
The wondrous things men do;
The speed they’ve made, the tales they’ve spun
     Have knocked me all askew.
But for the swiftest things afloat,
    That never seem to fail,
Without exception are the yarns
    Of Halley’s comet’s tail.
