One Life Spared



I rose from kneeling at her side,
     “False woman,” did I cry;
“It’s either you or suicide,
     Say yes, or here I die!”

“You might as well,” she cooly said,
     Without a plaintive sigh;
“For I can see, if we were wed,
     We both would have to die.”
