Shad! Shad! Shad!

They’re happy now in Gungywamp
     Ez happy ez kin be;
Not merely ‘cuz the grass is green,
     An’ buds are on the tree;
They’s other bigger, brighter things
     Thet makes their faces glad.
It is becuz the run hez come
     Uv shad, shad, shad!

The fishermen are out with nets
     To drift along the stream;
It’s come the happy time o’ year
When fishin’ is supreme.
The housewife shut off buyin’ meat,
     Her rustic soul is glad;
The dinner table’s loaded down
     With shad, shad, shad!

Oh, never mind the tardy spring,
     An’ never mind the cough;
An’ never mind the bones that keep
     Your shirt from comin’ off.
Oh, never mind the springtime woes
     Don’t think uv getting’ mad
Or out uv sorts becuz it’s time
     Fur shad, shad, shad!
