When Spring Smells In The Air

The Gungy river’s free from ice
     Far as the eye can see;
A reddish tinge has caught the tops
     Of each swamp maple tree.
Snow patches dot the shaded slopes,
     A chill is ev’rywhere,
But joy is felt in Gungywamp,
     ‘Cuz spring smells in the air.

The frost has mostly left the ground,
     Earthworms are workin’ through;
Each feller’s got a fishin’ rod
     Now knows jest what to do.
The April showers are chilly some,
     But joy is ev’rywhere,
‘Cuz troutin’ time hez come again,
     An’ spring smells in the air!
