Nature Sonnets (By the Village Poet)

I went to church one night not long ago
     An’ Susie Miller went to church as well;
     Just what the preacher said I couldn’t tell
Becuz my mind was on Miss Susie so,
An’ seemed to me he never would let go.
     Miss Susie she’s near old enough to be
     My ma but I’m as stuck as I kin be,
An’ thought that night I’d like to be her beau.
I ast her could I see her home, an’ shook
     For fear that she would laugh and turn me down,
An’ if she did I knew that I would look
     The most dejected chump in all the town.
“Good land!” she snapped, “I guess I’d better see
You home instid of your seein’ me!”
