Your Old Self

Just try to be your good, old self,
     No matter what the day;
‘Tis but a strain on nerve and brain
     To be some other way.
Your good, old self is best of all,
     Just plain old “so and so”;
Just try to be your good, old self
     And let the other go.

Suppose one neighbor steers a yacht,
     Another rides a wheel;
Perhaps another drives a span
     Or an automobile,
Don’t let that jar your equilib’
     Rium in any way;
Keep right along, and be your good
     Old self every day.

Suppose some fad strikes into town
     To change your look and shape,
Keep pegging on your steady gait,
     Don’t be a human ape.
Be natural, original,
     Put artifice to flight;
Your good, old self, whate’er the game,
     Will bear you thro’ all right.
