I
wonder why we parted,
Once we thought it could not be;
I
swore to love you ever,
And you, you promised me.
We
pledged upon the river,
And the lilies heard it all;
We
repledged in the garden,
Where the roses climbed the wall.
And
then, – the dream was over,
Cruel notes went to and fro;
And
here am I this moment
Wondering why we parted so.
