Handed Down

Mother’s got a pretty face
     And form that is perfection;
Alas! Her disposition’s what
     Folks call her chief objection.

Father’s homely as a jay,
     As homely as perdition,
But like a sunny summer day
     Is father’s disposition.

Mother says I take from pa
     My looks that are so homely;
Pa says my disposition’s like
     My mother’s, who is comely.

If I take my looks from pa,
     Who looks so like the thunder,
And take my actions from my ma
     No wonder I’m a wonder.
