Defeated!
Nay, it cannot be;
Not by a vote of common sense,
For people of intelligence,
Would
not defeat man such as he,
But
swell his great plurality.
Deluged
then, must we call it? Yea;
Not swept aside as man to man,
For in all that he leads the van.
But
thrust by blindness of to day.
He,
a dam of timbers clear and sound,
Deep-bedded,
staunch, in solid ground,
But in the storm of politics,
Midst shining gold and brazen tricks,
By
muddy torrents swept away.
