Sonnet To A Cucumber

Hail cucumber! Long green, the proper stuff,
     We welcome you upon the festive board;
When I say “We” I mean the mighty horde,
For all bow at your altar right enough,
Beef eater and vegetarian bluff.
     Bucolic in your habits O, cucum-
     Ber you are not the demon held by some,
But come to fill a long felt want I wean,
You are so sweet and cool and crisp and green.

A bellyache by any other name
O luscious cucum ber would be the same.
     Success succeeds, and so do you O cuke,
     Though seedy you have not won by a fluke,
But parked yourself by fair means into fame.
