I
love to get my paper from the country every week;
That
wayback, country paper, all so newsy, yet so meek;
It
tells me of the “doings” of my old-time social set;
O,
yes, a lively paper, the Gungawamp Gazette.
For
“Andy Jenks has bought a cow,”
“Ezekiel
Riggs has killed his sow,”
And “Jones is making cider”;
“The
farmers have begun to plough,”
And
“Mrs. Lamb is stopping now,
With Mrs. Jason Snyder”.
Ah,
yes, I love that paper with its batch of weekly news;
And
its column every Saturday I eagerly peruse;
And
who would cease to take it when such priceless things they’d miss?
For
every week it’s solid full of paragraphs like this:
“Jedd
Stubbs took off the turkey prize,”
“Seth Green has
started hewing ties,
For Deacon Amos Riddle”;
“The
band has busted, we surmise,
And
rumor says that Cyrus Wise
Has purchased him a fiddle.”
That
dear old country paper, may it never never die;
It
wakes such tender memories of days long flitted by;
It
tells of joys and sorrows; of the ones who pass above,
And
chronicles the “doings” of the girls I used to love.
For
“Jared Brown has froze’ his heels,”
And
“there are twins at Jonas Beal's,”
And “Susan Dowd is ailing”;
“The
misses Todd have bought them wheels,”
“John
Jones is shingling at O’Neil’s,”
With “colds and croup prevailing.”
