Fly Fame

It seems a very simple thing
     To kill the little flies,
You are so big, and they so small,
     And you so very wise.
You chase one with a spatter round
     The room most everywhere;
You bring it forward with a “slap”,
     Alas! He isn’t there.

The little fly is very fly,
     He dodges well your blow;
He leads you on a merry chase,
     And thinks you’re pretty slow.
And fame and fortune are the same,
     Just like flies, I swear;
You make a swipe to knock them out –
     Alas! They are not there.
