Pork and Poetry

(an escaped pig, trying to swim the Connecticut river, had nearly reached the opposite shore when it went to the bottom – news item)

O, that so brave a feat should end
Disastrously, alas!
Think of the future, had it made
     The river, smooth as glass.
Its next attempt aye, might have been
     The course to Boston Light;
And then the English Channel feat
     Would have allured its might.

And then, when these were overcome,
     In keeping with the age
We would have seen this wonder pig
     Upon the vaudeville stage!
High diving, and the swimming art
     We might have seen galore,
If only that poor, unknown pig
     Had reached the other shore!

Alas! That such a bright career
     Should be nipped in the bud;
Alack! His resting place should be
     Midst clams, seaweed and mud.
The world has lost, but let it keep
     This motto in its breast:
“Although he didn’t rise to fame
     He done his level best.”
