Winter Discontent

Each time I to the cellar go,
Coal hod in hand, and stooping low,
I cannot help but notice there,
With aching heart and deep despair,
How melts the coal pile, day by day,
And summer heat so far away!
The coal bin, once with comfort fraught,
Is now a “has been”, filled with naught.

A coal scuttle, sometimes spelled coalscuttle and also called a hod, "coal bucket", or "coal pail", is a bucket-like container for holding a small, intermediate supply of coal convenient to an indoor coal-fired stove or heater.
