There’s
many seasons uv the year that poets sing about,
But
I’ve a subject in my mind thet puts the rest to rout;
It
ain’t uv roses nur uv June, nur peaches nur uv cream,
Nur
uv the happy fishin’ days erlong the hidden stream.
It
beats ‘em all I really think, at least it does fur me,
An’
ev’ry time it comes erlong I’m happy ez kin be;
I’m
full uv joy an’ sweet content. with appertite perfound,
When
red creeps in the berry patch, an’ shortcake time gits round.
Well,
now, just pictur’ in yewr mind a kitchen long an’ wide,
A
good, ol’ fashion table there, yewr good ol’ mother’s pride,
All
crowned with dishes round an’ big, an’ filled with home-made fare,
An’
in the center uv it all a shortcake smilin’ there!
Well,
jest imagine sech a scene, the sides all drippin’ o’er
With
slushy, juicy, golden cream, an’ berries there galore!
A
double decker long an’ thick, the top jes’ slightly browned –
O,
I am never hard to find when shortcake time comes round.
O,
yew kin hev yewr canvas back, yewr squab an’ rare-bit rare,
Yewr
quail on toast, an’ bull-frog legs, an’ high falutin’ fare;
Yewr
table dote an’ a-la-cart, an’ Frenchy dishes fine,
But
I don’t hev no hankerin’ jes’ now fur that in mine.
No
sir, I want some dough mixed up an’ baked the good ol’ way,
Two
quarts uv strawb’rys mashed in cream, ez thick ez they will lay;
A
knife an’ fork, an’ lots uv room, an’ yew won’t hear no sound
Uv
findin’ fault uv any kind when shortcake time comes round.
