Sonnet On The Pun’kin

O punkin sweet! Nay, nay I do not sing
      Now uv the apple uv thet luscious name,
      But uv the yeller pumkin known to fame
Thet grows afield, amidst the corn, the thing
Thet made the ghostly Jack-O-Lantern king.
      The good ol’ yeller punkin put in pies
      Like mother uster set before our eyes
In winter time. O them wuz days when life
      Wuz full of joy ez we wuz full uv pie;
They warn’t no hunger discords care nur strife,
      Nur doctor’s bills to make us heave a sigh.
Fur yeller punkin was a cure fur all
Diseases uv the stommuck, great or small,
      When in a good, ol’ fashioned punkin pie.
