Good-Bye To The Peanut

I’m blue and I’m lonely, I’m cross and I’m sad,
I’m heartsick and weary, I’m gloomy and mad,
I’m languid and limpid, and all that’s not nice,
For peanuts, sweet peanuts, have gone up in price.

O what should I do when the circus comes round?
I cannot shell peanuts all over the ground;
I can’t feed the elephant, monkeys or mice,
For peanuts, dear peanuts, have gone up in price.

I think it’s a shame, a burning disgrace,
A criminal wrong, a slap in the face;
Raise bread, and raise pastry, raise beef and raise rice,
But please sirs, on peanuts, please lower the price.

No fun at camp meeting, no fun at the shore,
No fun at the circus, no fun anymore;
Now lemon drops, toothpicks and gum must suffice
For peanuts, O peanuts, have gone up in price.
