The Small Voice

They say that money talks, ah me!
     I dare say that is true;
I’ve heard the saying all my life,
     And know it thro’ and thro’.
Now I’m not deaf in either ear,
     Can hear the slightest sound,
And I have kept year after year,
     My ear close to the ground.
I’ve even lain awake o’ nights,
     From need and not from choice,
And up to now I frankly say
     I haven’t heard its voice.
